Short recap and update

Hi everybody,

About one year ago, I started the FSX Fokker T.5 project, which I combined with the Moerdijkbruggen bombardment memorial. Together with two guys from myflightdirector.com, we made a video that simulated this bombardment and the fatal end of the mission, which involved two Fokker G.1 heavy fighters and one Fokker T.5 bomber. This video project, in fact, has been initiated one year ago so I thought it would be nice to show this once again. Here it is!

I also want to note that my D.21 which I published back in December 2014 and updated earlier this year, has been downloaded over 9500 times. PC Pilot also included V2.00 with the bugfix on their cover CD in the September/October issue, something I feel proud of. Thanks everybody for downloading my creation and please: enjoy this bird!

T.5 progress is at a nice level, but calm. I've done a bit of texturing in the past few weeks.

Last saturday I created the Bosch horns. These horns were placed just behind the pilot at the fuselage roof. One of these horns functions as a landing gear warning (triggered when the throttle is closed and the gear is still retracted). The other one is a crew-operated communication horn, I assume the crewmembers could use it as a warning to switch on their intercom systems.

The real horns:

T.5 status update

Hi there,

There's a lot to tell with respect to the latest update. I've started texturing on the interior, since I had a few uncertainties regarding the fuselage mid section. Got a bit tired of modelling too ;-)

In the following picture, you can see how I textured the rims of the windows. In fact, they look better with such a texture, instead of textured with only one color.

Also added texture to the first-aid-kit, the so-called 'Verbandtasch voor vliegtuigen'. You can see the structural detail I added on the fuselage walls.

Greatest mystery this summer was the radio unit. According to documentation, we eventually found out that the Telefunken Station 1001bF was used on the T.5, and we found a sketch made by a former T.5 radio operator. This resulted in the radio unit shown below.

Further texturing has been performed on the interior, in both the nose and mid section (though the latter isn't completely done). Fortunately, the wooden floors were painted in a Rubbol AZ paint 'Linoleum color', so I expect they were brownish. Better that the dull grey which was used as a standard. Textured below, as you can see, are the observer's seat, his table, the harness, tip-up seat, signal rounds (cork covered cylinders) and more.

Fortunately, the T.5 utilized the same oxygen units as the D.21. Therefore I was able to transfer the 3D and 2D visuals to the T.5. Above the Munerelle oxygen regulation unit is the Amroh intercom system. Every crewmember has its own pair of these. Shown here is the pilot's equipment.

Fire extinguishers were also available. I'm not sure yet about the label, but it looks good so far. Again, every crewmember has one.

The signal gun holder.

And the details of the flooring. They're made of wood, so I suspect they looked like this. Photographs don't show the correct colors (only B/W photo's available). Around the edges, the hatches are covered with metal strips. The foremost hatch was an escape/access hatch. In this hatch, there was an opening for the Nedinsco bombsight. The rear port hatch was for the camera, for aerial footage (for recce), while the rear starboard was for the driftmeter.

 Hope you like this guys!

Have a nice weekend!

Fokker T.5 interior status

Hi everybody,

I've been working hard on the T.5 interior and things are rocking! The nose section, where the pilot and the bombardier/commander/navigator were located, is more or less finished, except texture work of course.

Another shot, backwards this time.

Next on the list had to be the centre section. Here, the radio operator and the second pilot/gunner are located.

The co-pilot's office he'd have when flying the aeroplane:

And the (basic) layout of the radio operator's station.

There's a lot of detail, but I should use the poly budged with sense. So I might reduce some detail, though I'll keep it as nice as possible.

Cheers! Daan

Blender tutorial

Hi everybody,

Tonight I made a tutorial to create a basic aircraft fuselage shape with structure in Blender. Please have a look at: http://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/threads/tutorial-how-to-create-a-basic-fuselage-with-some-nice-structural-detail.434661/

Have fun!

Fokker projects status

Hi all!

Status update of my two Fokker airplanes: the Danish D.21 fighter and the T.5 bomber.

I'm working with WebSimConnect now, using the WebSimData map in my Danish D.21 (and planning it in my T.5 as well). For more information, please visit websimconnect.webs.com.
You can see the map here, next to the (functional) winding watch.

Next to that, I improved the color combinations of the Danish VC. Small changes, but looks better in my eyes now.

And, the T.5!

The front section has been subject to extensive research in the past days. There are still a few questions to be answered, but thanks to all helpful men I've been able to come this far now.

Front section, cockpit part is mostly done (except of structural details and roof details). The yoke is made of one object and animated using a skinned mesh animation (which is, as you might know, already possible in the Blender2FSX toolset). Works flawlessly! The trigger at the right grip of the yoke is the brake lever. The braking is applied using this lever, but differential control is done with the rudder pedals. So, no left and right toetip brakes. The parking brake is engaged by mounting the hook to the grip, so that the lever is applied for 100% constantly.

Below the pilot's floor: all control rods of the flight controls. Rudder pedals are also made of one skinned mesh object.

And we conclude with a few more moody screenshots.

T.5 VC progress

Dear readers,

The cockpit of the Fokker T.5 is progressing nicely. The side consoles for the pilot are almost done by now, only coding and texturing remain there.

The right hand side units, containing engine instruments and elektrical equipment (Ragonot).

The left console, with engine controls.

The observer's position. His panel was on the left and could be rotated.

Clearly visible in this rotated view is the Munerelle oxygen unit, as well as the Ragonot fuseholders and the (AFAIK) Labinal compass light (the compass is still not added).

Hope you like it!

Kind regards,

Daan

Persisting LOD issue: bugfix

Hi everybody,

Today a user made me aware of the persisting issue in a LOD of the 1938 model of D.21 V2.00. This was on the correction list for V2.00 from V1.00 on, but apparently it didn't get fixed. It is now, the bugfix can be downloaded here:

T.5 and D.21 projects status

Hi there!

In the past few weeks, I've been working on two projects: the Danish version of the D.21 and the T.5 bomber VC. The Danish version is progressing nicely, most extra modelling is done and at the moment we're working on the gauge textures. Need some programming thereafter, and some work to get the thing up-to-date with V2.00. Meanwhile, I'm collecting 'bugs' of V2.00, things I encounter myself mainly.

A pic of the Danish VC (well, outdated already, this one shows in fact all finished modelling work)

My watch!

Example of the labelling work (in Danish!)

The T.5 is in VC modelling stage. I've been working on the main panel and the electrical panel. This is the latest in-sim shot:

Hope you like!

Memorial May 13, Dordrecht

Hi everybody,

After months of preparations and hard work, today was the premiere of the T.5 video at the Moerdijkbruggen Bombing Memorial. Based on the reactions we received afterwards, the video can be regarded as successful. IMHO, Jonah has done a wonderful job in editing this video.

The memorial itself was also very good. There was a lot of music, several inspirational speeches and a good atmosphere. I regard it as a worthy tribute to the seven young men (between 22 and 27 years old), who died for freedom.

We had the honor to talk with relatives and other relations of the brave people that served our army in May 1940. Even a gunner from a Fokker C.5 biplane was present, being at high age.
A very interesting thing we came across today, was an original D.21 logo that was on the tail of the D.21s (illustrated below on my D.21). A pilot ripped it off his D.21 after having to land the plane during the war. The son of this pilot held a speech on the memorial and showed the relic.

A short report of the memorial, including a few shots from our video, can be found here. The video itself will be published on YouTube later on, which will be announced here as well.

From this place, I'd like to thank everybody who contributed to the Memorial Video project. Thank you:

- Jonah Snoei (JRSchiphol)
- Roel Lamé
- Wim Anceaux
- Huub Vink
- Museum CRASH
- NL2000
- and many other individuals around. Please forgive me if I didn't mention you here, it's hard to tell which contribution is really essential for the video project and which is not ;)

Kind regards,

D.21 V2.00 bugfix: forgotten effects

Hi everybody,

Only after release of V2.00, I realized that I didn't include my improved light effects. I refer to them in only the 1940 aircraft.cfg, but also forgot to do that in the 1938 aircraft.cfg.

Here's the bugfix. Unzip in your FSX directory.

Have fun! I'll upload V2.00 to more sites today!

Fokker T.5 video recordings

Hi there,

To show you a tiny bit of the video recording work we're working on, I put here an image I borrowed from JRSchiphol's FB.

As you can see, Fokker G.1 304 shouldn't be there because it wasn't the 304, and these are early colors. But it gives a nice view!

The T.5 cannot be downloaded yet, but the G.1 (in beta, where it will ever remain), can be downloaded here: http://simviation.com/1/search?submit=1&keywords=fokker&categoryId=&page=2&filename=

Projects progress

Hi everybody,

It's been a while since I posted here, but that doesn't mean I haven't done anything. I'll give an overview of the current status of the several (correlated) projects I'm on at the moment.

Fokker D.21 FSX - V2.00

The Fokker D.21 has just been downloaded over 5000 times since official release! All those who use it: thank you very much, I hope you enjoy my creation!
The upcoming version of the D.21 will be V2.00. I've been thinking about a V1.50 or anything else between 1 and 2, but since there will be changed 'a lot', I decided to increase the version number to 2.00. What will be included?

- TacPack support for the D.21. That implies: working guns ;)
- Improved Flight Dynamics. Note: if you think the V1.00 FD are better, use them. Never mind.
- Additional, high quality repaints (LVA 219, 221, 229, 236 and MLM/NMM replica) for the 1940 version.

Though this list is pretty well finished ATM, I can't give a release date for V2.00 yet. I'll keep you updated!

Fokker T.5 FSX

The T.5 bird is in 90% finished state regarding the exterior model. Some small details in both model and texture need to be done yet, but the overall thing is good to go (for the video, see below). I am still missing information, so if you have some good photographs, drawings or data on the T.5 - welcome!

Moerdijkbridges memorial video
Flight recordings of the memorial video have been started. Don't know what this project is about? Please visit this website. For the memorial, JRSchiphol and I are creating a video, showing the fatal flight on 13-5-1940. This video will be shown in the memorial service on May 13, 2015, in Dordrecht.

CRASH
Photograph by Huub Vink
On April 10, last friday, I gave a presentation about the virtual D.21 in the CRASH Museum in Aalsmeerderbrug. This museum is the home of the wreck of D.21 229 (also featured in Fokker D.21 FSX - V2.00), flown by Koos Roos during the German invasion in May 1940. The people of the museum are very very friendly and helpful in the D.21 and T.5 projects.
The entire museum has an open atmosphere (actually, you can even touch the wreckages!).
If you're close to Schiphol, please visit the museum! Their website: http://www.crash40-45.nl/

3D-printing my work

Hi everybody,

One part of the D.21 cockpit is a fuseholder. These fuseholders were made by the French firm Ragonot, but no fuseholder is know to exist today. As an experiment, I revised and refined the 3D-model of the fuseholder, in order to print it. This is what the mesh looks like, I sent these 3 separate objects to Shapeways (www.shapeways.com).

And this is the resulting thing. Though the surface isn't perfect due to the plastic/printing structure, it is very accurate and exactly what I've been modelling. Fun to have it in your hands!

War Memorial Moerdijk

Hi everybody,

Again, I need to mention the War Memorial for the fallen Dutch Fokker crew who died in their effort to bomb the bridge near Moerdijk on May 13, 1940. They had to do so, in order to stop the advancing Hitler troops on their way to the capital of Holland. Before the flight, the crewmen already knew they wouldn't survive because of the Luftwaffe air superiority over the target. They yet did their mission, but failed because of a bomb malfunction and miss. The crew of both the Fokker T.5 bomber and an escorting Fokker G.1 fighter were killed in action.

A far relative of the T.5 pilot (W.F. Anceaux) is setting up a memorial event on May 13, 2015. Simultaneous with initiating my FSX Fokker T.5 project, I decided to jump into his project with providing him a supporting video, made using FSX and my T.5.

This video will be made by one of the best Dutch flight simulation 'Flight Directors', most commonly known as JRSchiphol. My T.5 is for about 85% complete for this videoshooting, so this is progressing quite nicely.

At the other hand, mr. Wim Anceaux, the pilot's relative, has put up both a foundation and a website. In order to finance his project, he started crowdfunding, which can be found here.
In short, this is the video mr. Anceaux uses to attract people.

To conclude, I'd like you to please consider supporting this project via the crowdfunding! Thanks in advance!

Kind regards,

Daan

T.5 project status

Hi all,

The T.5 is coming along nicely. I made the base textures for the exterior and mr. Huub Vink (who has also made a few extra paints for the upcoming TacPacked D.21 update) shaded them and did a bit of weathering on them. I now have added specularity and bump maps, which looks pretty good.
Here's a pic.

By the way, the tailwheel's orientation is reversed, due to some struggles with the skinned meshes. I still need to get comfortable with these bones.

TacPack and the D.21

Hi everybody,

First, I want to thank you very much for your enthousiasm about the D.21! I regularly count the downloads on the various sites and concluded, last week the total download count passed 4000 (since December 19). That feels good!

As some of you might have observed, VRS published TacPack version 1.4.2.0 (the former being 1.4.1.8). That's good news for me, since my D.21 is based on this version. So, I run through a testing process and in a while, a shooting D.21 will be released, including a few more fantastic repaints.

T.5 in texturing phase

Hi everybody,

Time to bring an T.5 update to you: I'm texturing the beast. But in the meantime, more has happened. I made an official first virtual flight with the T.5, from Welschap Airfield (which is currently Eindhoven Airport), made by Cees Donker. Cees is back on scenerydesign again and in what a way! I feel like coming home in sim with my D.21 ;)

Anyway, this is a shot from the tail turret over Welschap.

Obviously, the starting point of the T.5 texturing phase, after a horrible mapping week, was the commonality between the T.5 and D.21. This is the main landing gear tyre, I improved threading and color transition between wall and threading, with respect to the D.21.

As you might observe, I made an Ambient Occlusion pass with Blender on the plane to improve, well, shading... Satisfied!

Todays update was on the texturing, I finished all riveting and most metal parts fasteners.

At the rear fuselage section, I started shading of the fabric panels. Tedious job...

Hope this informs you guys!

Wishing you a blessed sunday, regards, Daan
